THE AUTHOR OF THE FORGETTING RIVER
A QUEST TO CRACK A FAMILY MYSTERY OF GENEALOGY, HIDDEN IDENTITY & INQUISITION SECRETS
starred Kirkus Review:
Publishers Weekly: Top Ten Memoirs
"The haunting account of an investigative journalist's efforts to uncover her family's hidden Sephardic Jewish past.

In this compelling mix of memoir and reporting, a journalist travels thousands of miles, pores through centuries-old documents, and uses DNA evidence to discover the truth about her heritage."
Just like her ancestors, her tale wanders the globe from the dusty archives at a California university, a DNA lab in Texas, a lawyer in Costa Rica, and a nearly 200-year-old Paris synagogue, but Carvajal's powerful prose is strong enough to hold these divergent story lines in a cohesive and engaging narrative of self-discovery and historical investigation.

Filming to date:

A character driven film that allows the audience to join individual storytellers as they learn about their families' often tortuous journeys from the 14th century to the present.

The film follows journalist Doreen Carvajal, historian Devin Naar, Artist Carlos DeMedeiros, student Ise Sharp, neuroscientist Leonel Antonio Chevez, as they trace their families' journeys and changes of identity from Spain and Portugal across the globe to the New World and beyond.
